A Writer's Space

Aaaaaah (that's a relieved sigh, not a scream...just to be clear).

Here I sit in my new office. I have two giant Rubbermaid tubs, full to overflowing, just waiting to be emptied, the contents organized in drawers or filed. Every time I need something, I have to dig through a tub. And I'm cool with that, because this is my office.

Aaaaaah. (Still not screaming)

I don't remember if I mentioned it on here, but hubby has been doing some construction around this joint. He ripped up hardwood floors, tore out a platform and the bottom of a set of stairs, hammering through walls.

I ripped up the carpeting and the carpet tack strips. Yeah, I know. I rock. ;) Phew.

After all that, he built some walls, laid some hardwood floors, built new stairs, painted, re-wired electricity, put in light fixtures/switches/outlets, so on and so forth.

I painted some. And then I grouted some tile. Oh yeah, he put the tile down and then sponged it off afterward. Cuz' he's awesome like that.

I was busy. What do you want?

And all of this adds up to me having a main floor office! So exciting! Before, my office was down in the depths of the basement, sharing space with a guest bed, rolling towers full of photos and scrap-booking materials, and a sewing area. I was crammed in one corner. Yes, it was still an office, and more than some have, so I wasn't actually complaining, but I also couldn't go down to my dungeon to write if my kids were upstairs in their rooms, or out back, or anywhere I couldn't see/hear them from the basement, which meant no time for my office in the summer. But now they can be anywhere! And I can hear them. I know what they're doing. And I can be writing while knowing what they're doing.

Woot!

We all need a space to create. For some, it's a huge office with a gorgeous view. For others, it's a closet converted to an office, or a guest room with a desk or table in it, or their lap on the sofa. Maybe it's a lawn chair out back, a stolen corner of their "day job" office, a restaurant or coffee shop.

But we all need a space to create in. No matter how tiny that space is. Even if we have to dig it out and force it into shape, it's still a space for creating. It frees us up to focus on our words, our artwork, our crocheting, our whatever-it-is-we're-creating.

I'd post some office pics for you, but I'll be paying Nutschell a visit in the coming months, so I'll have to wait to share it with you until then. Plus, it's not quite picture-worthy yet. Let me do a little more organizing.

In the meantime, I hope you ferret out a little bit of a space for yourself.

And create.

P.S. For those who wondered, and until I can reply to each of you individually, the funky spiked melon in my Wednesday post was a kiwano melon, or horned melon fruit. It really didn't taste half bad. The texture was just a bit gag-worthy for a noob. I got it at a King Soopers, so a regular chain supermarket.

P.P.S The Black Forest fire is being slowly, but surely, beaten into submission. Many have been allowed back to their homes (or the land their homes used to stand on). This fire officially exceeded Waldo Canyon for damage, though the loss of life was equal (2). It was horrific, but once again the community has come together, which is wonderful. There was another fire at the Royal Gorge Bridge. The animals lived, and the damage to the bridge, itself, was minimal, but the park surrounding it was fairly totaled. There are still other fires burning, as well, so our state is not yet free of the summer flames. We have been getting a bit of a rain each day, and I hope that continues through the rest of summer.

What's your creation space like? Do you have an office or is it purely about your lap? What's your view? Have you gone out to get one of those melons yet? Come on, you know you want to!

May you find your Muse.

How awesome! I can't wait to see the pics when you post them. :)

Right now I write in the guest room because that's where our one computer lives. It's all good though. As you said, at least I have a place to write. :)

Have a great week. ☺

Nice! It's always great to have a nice, little, cozy spot to create in.

Looking forward to those pics! :)

A room of one's own, I think it's called.

I share an office with my hubby. Usually that's ok (he works during the day), but occasionally it's difficult.

And I didn't know you were a scrapbooker. We could compare piles of scrapbooking supplies. I don't get to play with mine very often.

Yes!!!
Glad you're getting your piece of the pie!
You don't want to know about my space; you'll be so jealous, you'll have your husband back to ripping walls and floorboards. My only problem, now that I have many spaces, I crave intimacy, and so I end up in the same space as my husband, where our keyboards shut each other up.

My office makes me sad. My brother-in-law, after getting kicked out of his house, had to move all of his stuff out or lose it (all of his things being very expensive, of course) so my writing office is now a storage room for a rich person's useless but expensive junk. I just sit at the kitchen table now...

Glad you have your own office in a great location now! We all need our space.
Good news that most of the fires are under control.

I'll look forward to seeing your new writing space at Nutschell's!

I write in my Study on our second floor, which was just mine, but I'm sharing it with hubs in the evenings. I like my writing place to be 2nd level or higher, so I can look out into the tree branches, yet see what's happening below as well.

I used to write at the dining room table before the kids moved out on their own, because I liked the brightness in that room and the view of our back garden.

Glad that you are okay and safe from the fires around your area.

Can your husband come do some re-wiring and stuff for us? Seriously.

Congrats on the new office! That's awesome. Enjoy your creative space, may it be an inviting place for your muse to hang out.

Way to go! And hey, my "space" will be on Nutschell's site this summer as well.

I am envious you have this great new office space! I am glad just to have a desk piles to overflowing at the end of the bedroom (I know, not recommended). Sounds like a serious bit of work by the ol' man but I am sure being able to watch the kids is a plus.

I thought of you when I saw the fire on TV. You Coloradoans never escape this stuff and summer has just begun! Hope you have a safe one.

My space is about putting my laptop on my lap and hiding the screen from view, otherwise I get paranoid that what I'm writing is being judged. I would love to have an office one day, but now just isn't the time for that, and I'm okay with that.

My creation space is actually very boring. A black desk with a wide monitor, facing the windows so I never stray from sunlight while I work. Sometimes, when I'm feeling exotic, I create in waiting rooms or hotel rooms. I'd say my physical acts are quite boring!

A dedicated, comfortable workspace is terrestrial paradise. I love it. Aaaaaah :-)

I have a small, cozy office with a view of our small courtyard and the red tiled roofs of other garages. Not that I look outside all that much. Right in front of my desk is a blue wall that I stare at. Blankly. A lot. :)

Oh Yeah...thank goodness for Awesome Husbands who are Handy, and of course your rockin' rippin'!

I use to say I had to start in a clean space before I could get really creative. That was before I started writing and scrapbooking my Family History. Now I just say...'what the hey...the folks I'm writing for are all dead, and I've got to get this done before I become on of them...no time to clean...just pick up where I left off....or like you dig in a tub!

My space is a corner in my room with my desk and a bunch of books. Not very exciting but it works!

Congratulations on an office!
I love my office. But, sometimes I also love my dining room table, instead. And often I have to leave the house entirely to get anything done.
Right now I'm at the library.

Very awesome you got your office done! That sounds like it was a crazy amount of work. I don't know how to do any of that remodeling stuff.

My create space is forced to the living room now, since I gutted the spare bedroom for my brother to use for a while. Having my desk in the living room isn't all that great, though. Way way way too many distractions :-(

I've not yet grabbed me one of those fruit, but I most certainly want to!

I saw a sad report on the news about someone losing their place in that fire. Some guy who had helped a lot of others during past fires. Plans to even rebuild at the same location despite everything. Was pretty touching.
