It's ShaNo Time Again & A Thank You to Yolanda!

Happy Day After National Author's Day!

What's that? November? Month of my birth? That must mean it's time for ShaNoShoStoWriEdSubMo again!

Don't tell me you've never heard of it. Surely you jest.

See, I don't want to write an entire novel this month, but I love the infectious energy of NaNoWriMo. So I set my own goals and use those to get back into the routines that faltered when the kids were home for the summer.

Feel free to join me in your own version of NaNo if you're not participating in the real one! It's the  energy and support that drive the month.

ShaNoShoStoWriEdSubMo stands for Shannon's Novel & Short Story Writing, Editing, and Submitting Month.

The Sub part of it all was a bigger deal before I reached the point I'm currently at with stories, so I'll be redefining it mildly this year.

My goals for the month will be:

1. Write 2 new short stories
2. Revise the 4 short stories/flash fiction currently in need of revisions
3. Submit 6 new short stories/flash this month
4. Complete the current round of revisions on Wendigo Nights
5. Post-outline and mark needed revisions on Lonely Hollow: Synthesis
6. Decide which novel writing project I will begin writing next

I'll update weekly on my progress.

I'd also like to thank Yolanda for the fun Halloween series of posts she put together, and for allowing me to participate. I won the 2015 Halloween Flash Fiction Contest! You can GO HERE to find links to all the entries. Poor Jerry. He never saw it coming.

Alex J. Cavanaugh was the winner of a copy of The Deep, Dark Woods, with my short story The Blue Mist. Now if we can just reach publication date, I can send him a copy!

What goals do you have for this month? Are you participating in NaNo or creating your own? Did you follow along with Yolanda's great Halloween posts this year?

May you find your Muse.

I saw that you'd won - congratulations.

Congratulations on the win! And good luck with your goals this month. I'm doing NaNo again - fingers crossed! :)

Congratulations! Yolanda's challenge was so much fun. Good luck this month with your goals. My goals are to survive shopping with my mom this week and the American Thanksgiving with my mother-in-law. I might do my own NaNo in January!

Ah, you're determined!

I'm a big fan of your version. We both look forward to not killing ourselves in the name of spitting out a quick novel... but we do support those who do. Like Christine, I'm just trying to make it through the holidays without killing someone. Let's not put the pressure of writing a novel on top of that.

I'm not doing NaNo and I love yours though I could never remember it. I have some goals for the rest of the year and so far they're on track.

That sounds like a busy but reasonable November! Right now I'm just preparing for WFC, but afterward I want to knock at last another act out of my novel. It'd be funny if I accidentally finished it during NaNo.

Hi Shannon, thanks for the shout out. I loved doing the Halloween Interview and Flash Challenge, the writers make it a success! So many top notch Halloween stories. Congratulations on your win! Well deserved!
I am doing NaNo this year. I promised myself I would shut down everything else (okay that was a lie, but I did try) and concentrate on that 4th book. Just want that rough draft finished. I had a great first day - and no I don't outline, at least not on paper - not until I have a real handle on the plot. Right now I'm working in one of the oddest ways ever. I have around 20,000 words written and not in a chapter by chapter format. It's just how this book started out and as I proceed with NaNo the same thing is occurring. I'm writing scenes completely out of order.I'm blaming the characters. I'm just hoping that at some point I'll put it all together for one great novel. Just stopped back to say hi - thanks again - back to work!

This is a fantastic idea, Shannon! You've totally inspired me to come up with my own NaNo-ism! Hmm...I'll have to think. Hold please....But while you hold, major CONGRATS on your win!

I feel my list for November is never ending. No writing; have to give up on a project to get some beta reading and reviews done. i thought being a writer was about writing my own stories, lol.

I've got NaNo, which I affectionately refer to as NaNu NaNu, on my plate, along with rewriting another book and completing a bunch of fiction articles to pay the bills. It's going to be an extremely busy month!

I love that you took the concept of NaNo and tweaked it to work for you. That's the way it should be. Good luck!

I like the way you think and the rules for your own ShaNoShoStoWriEdSubMo!

I figure more reasonable goals that are more pertinent to my current situation are a plus.

Good luck with NaNo!

January sounds like a really good time for NaNo. November and December are such crazy months. January's a bit of a lull for me. I bet you could get people to join you for that one.

I am!

Shannon Lawrence said...

No kidding. There's so much going on this month and next. And even if there weren't, I just really prefer figuring out what I personally need to set as goals instead of going for a challenge that isn't realistic for me, personally.

I've now done ShaNo three years in a row, I think? I can shoot off the term by rote now, ha!

Shannon Lawrence said...

That would be great! The first year I hijacked NaNo, I set a goal to finish a novel I was already working on. I think we should all just make it work for ourselves, whatever that may be.

I've always thought I'd like to be able to write scenes out of order, but my brain just shuts me down. No. I think it's great you're able to, even if it's unexpected. I was just talking to someone this past week who had inadvertently been doing that, and she was a bit freaked out, because it's not at all how her brain works. Good luck to both of you!

Shannon Lawrence said...

Yes! I'll have to come see if you figured one out.

(Choose Your Own NaNo, lol)

You'd think, right? The more you do it, the more you discover it's just not that easy anymore.

Shannon Lawrence said...

Wow, you're really going for it this month. Mad props! I hope you meet all your goals.

Shannon Lawrence said...

Why, thank you! It works so much better for me.
