Huge Thank You, Writer's Fun Zone, Read with Fey, & Free Horror Reading

We've found our way to the end of another month already!

I forgot to link to my interview at Writer's Fun Zone: Author Q&A with Shannon Lawrence.

I also did a live reading of my Lupercalia/Valentine's horror piece, Blind Date from Happy Ghoulidays, which is available on YouTube to watch: Stories Live! Love Kills.

To thank everyone who allowed me to be a guest during my book launch for The Business of Short Stories, my beta readers, and those who helped in other ways, I invited them to send me something they'd like to share. Following are their books or blog posts they wanted to share, and hopefully a great way to pick up a new read!

Chrys Fey is doing a reading challenge this year that I intend to take part in. The Read with Fey Challenge asks that you read 10 books for writers in 2022. It started January 1 and will go through December 31.

Read with Fey: Reading Challenge for Writers

You don't have to read 10 books for writers. Set your own goal! I likely won't make it to 10, as nonfiction books take me longer to read and I have other nonfiction books to read this year, so I'm going to set my goal for 5 books for writers.

Hashtags for the challenge: #ReadWithFey #ReadWithFey2022

There's no sign up, but she does have an option for you to add yourself to the storygraph she's created. Read more at Write with Fey.

And, hey, my book counts as a book for writers, so if you've picked it up or plan to, that's one down!

Speaking of which, I have more formats available for The Business of Short Stories now, most of which are at this Books2Read universal link. For some reason I've had a lot of problem getting the Books2Read link to auto-populate, so I've had to manually add a bunch of the links. It doesn't show on this link, but the book is also available from Walmart. Check out my Publications tab for more direct links.

Are you participating in Chrys's challenge? Do you already have some books you're interested in reading for it? Have you read any of the books in this post?

May you find your Muse.

[Mostly] Wordless Wednesday - Snowy Oldies & Links

Today's [Mostly] Wordless Wednesday consists of a couple more photos that I've posted before. We got a lovely powdery snow the other night, but I missed the opportunity to go to Garden of the Gods for photos, so I thought I'd share some I took previously.

Now for some links.

Accepting Submissions:

Crossed Genres will be taking submissions with the theme of Music from February 1 through February 28. (Their Food-themed issue closes January 31.) Pays $.05/word.

REUTS Publications is accepting submissions in any genre, as long as it is fiction and aimed at YA and/or NA. Full-length novels only.

Fertility Today is open to submissions. 800-1500 words. They have a list of categories for you to write to. For the most part, they seem to want articles from professionals, but they have a "My Story" section. Unsure of pay.

L'iVoire Press is accepting submissions of hunting stories. They pay $1000 per story. They ask that you submit a rough draft and they'll then work with you to edit it.

Contests:

Crested Butte Writers holds their annual Sandy Writing Competition. Open to both published and unpublished authors. A little birdie told me that they didn't get many entries in anything other than YA, so now might be a good time to enter. Closes February 10. $35 entry fee. 1st place in each category receives $60.

Kazka Press has a monthly 713 Flash Fiction Contest. The theme for February is "Journeys," with a deadline of February 20. Sci-fi, fantasy and horror. 500-1000 words. Pays $15 per story.

Blog Stuff:

Alex J. Cavanaugh is holding his Epic 2000 Follower Giveaway. This runs until he has 2000 followers. Last I looked, he was at 1975. Grand prize is a signed copy of all three of his Cassa-series books, $10 iTunes card, t-shirt of your choice from Neat-rama, and three books donated to the library of your choice. First prize is one signed copy of one of his books, $10 iTunes card, and one book donated to a library of your choice.

Ellie Garratt is looking for writers of Speculative Fiction who might like to guest post or be interviewed on her blog in February.

Anything to add? Anything to announce? News? Interested in any of the links above?

May you find your Muse.

Dear Spammers...

Dear Spammers,

No, I do not want to post about your swimming pool materials or your iPad headrest. I don't want to test out your eyeglasses (I wear contacts, never glasses). Your products don't appeal to me in any way. I would really like some chocolate right at this moment. Anyone want to send me some for a review? I could use something yummy to snack on. I'd like a million dollars; send me some cash to "sample," wouldja'?

I'm not interested in your guest post about parenting, business, exercise, job searches, fill-in-the-blank. It will just include "one little applicable link?" That's all? Oh, golly gee whiz, I'd be glad to let you sell a product on my blog with a topic that has absolutely nothing to do with reading, writing, movies, photography, or anything I could even pretend to be interested in.

What? You love my blog? You think it is well-written? You were turned onto it by a friend? Then how is it you've never READ the damn thing? When the beginning content of your email is no better than the Anonymous posts I've already blocked, you should move on.

No thanks, I have no capacity to even try to be interested in that b.s. you'd like to "sponsor" on my blog. Sponsor this:

by Robert Dillon, clker.com
You'd like me to post a Google map image you've made of x, y, or z? And you were drawn to me for this because...?

Want my help? Actually have read my blog. Offer me something that has to do with the topics I discuss here, not something that has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm interested in, or what my readers are interested in. Pay attention to what I've said IN MY BIO on the side of the page about what I will or will not do. And don't LIE TO ME about being a reader/fan/follower when it is quite obvious that YOU ARE NOT. And don't expect me to post what you want me to post. I'll try your product that has to do with reading or writing (MAYBE), and I'll post a fair review of it (IF I SO CHOOSE), but I am not here to sell out and be your ad-crony.

Should I be flattered that I've reached a point where I get constant spam concerning my blog? Did I pass some magical threshold of awesomeness that brought this down on my head? You know what the irritating part is? When I've written back to someone because it wasn't as much dissociated spam, and I've told them I'm not interested and only post such and such, I've had people write back and argue. When I try to ignore emails, they will persist and email me over and over and over until I finally reply with a simple "Not interested," (and even then, many of those people will CONTINUE to harangue me or will join the arguing crowd).

RUDE. INVASIVE.

ENOUGH!

How do you guys handle all the spam and unrelated requests? Do you find it funny or irritating? How do you reply (or do you)? Is it time for me to put up a tab with a specific list of what I will and will not do so I can just reply to them with the link? You can't argue with a link, right? It won't talk back. Then again, they probably still won't read it. Do I need to remove my bloody email??

Tell me about the weirdest email you've received about your blog, spam or otherwise!

May you find your Muse.

Odds & Ends, Updates & Invitation to Guest Post

Hello there!  Today will be a bit of a mishmash, instead of anything themed, but there are some things I wanted to mention, and I've got some catching up to do (still).

Guest Posts - I've been getting a lot of contact about guest posts.  I'm delighted to feature guest posts or do interviews (those will take longer to get up since they take time to do, at least how I do it).  However, any guest posts on my blog need to involve writing or be related to one's book, as my intent is to help fellow writers out.  Guest posts will typically go up on Fridays.  If you'd like to guest post, or would like to do an interview about your book/writing process/etc., contact me through my profile or post in the comments at any time.

Randy Lindsay Featured Me! - I was so flattered to see that Randy Lindsay of Author in Training featured The Warrior Muse on his Friday post.  Check out his blog and show him a little love.  He posts a writing prod (with his response to it), features other blogs, and does movie reviews.  He's a great guy, and well worth checking out.

BuNoWriMo - Sigh.  I never got past 5% progress on Myth Stalker.  However, I'm happy because it got me started on writing it.  I was already behind on it, but the fire sort of did me in.  Not so much the evacuation, mind you, but I was so distracted and nervous once it started so close to me that I failed to get any writing done at all.  I spent a lot of time refreshing Twitter to track #WaldoCanyonFire, as well as the local paper's site, which was updating regularly, and Facebook, where I was getting information.  If I was on the computer, that's what I was doing.  I am looking forward to getting started again, AND I made progress with...

Project 52 - I did a little bit of work toward the list, so I can now strike out:

7. Work on poetry
8. Submit at least 1 poem for publication
16. Develop Warrior Muse logo (Jeremy did this one for me, but it's done, all the same!)
19. Compile spreadsheet of publications
33. Go hiking at Red Rocks/photos
36. Get at least 1 piece published (more details to come soon!)
38. Prepare for the 2012 A to Z (obviously done!)
44. Take four "field trips" this year (we've been taking these almost weekly)
50. Attend more writer's meetings
51. Get better about reading through Writer's Digest magazines when they arrive

Wow!  I didn't realize how many I'd finished.  15/52.  I may be updating a few things, due to projects that have changed, or a change in focus.  Anything removed will be replaced by something else.

Michael Abayomi - Fellow blogger, Michael Abayomi is conducting an Indiegogo campaign to gather funds for his next project Guardians & the Lost Paradise.  Pass it along, if you're interested.  Good luck, Michael!

That's it for today!  I will have a choice between two field trips I took this week for [Mostly] Wordless Wednesday: Helen Hunt Falls and the Royal Gorge Bridge.  I haven't decided which will go up this week, and which next week, but I'm excited to have something positive to pass along...and purdy.

How did you do in BuNoWriMo?  Interested in guest posting?  Are you doing, or have you done, Project 52?  How are you doing at meeting any goals you've made for yourself, now that we're more than halfway through the year?

May you find your Muse.
