Author Stephen Tremp Guest Posts!

Hello, and Happy Almost Friday! Today we have a guest poster: Stephen Tremp, author of Breakthrough and the newly released Opening. Welcome, Stephen!

While Stephen is covering my blog for me, I am posting my co-host Getting to Know You over on the A to Z Challenge Blog. I reveal a few interesting facts and more!

It's all yours, Stephen!

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones" - Albert Einstein

Since we tapped into Futurists and Visionaries earlier this this blog tour, I thought I would take the liberty to further this topic and discuss how our civilization might evolve, if we don't destroy each other first. This is a summation of possible civilizations we might be fortunate to evolve into taken from Professor Michio Kaku, theoretical physicist from New York University:

A Class 0 (Zero) Civilization, of which we are one, uses organic and man-made resources such as wind, water, and fossil fuels as energy sources to power our civilization. For the record, there are some who believe we are a reemerging Class 0 Civilization, replacing more advanced human civilizations from the past who have either been destroyed, or have left for the stars and may be waiting for us to join them.

A Class I Civilization is a society that has evolved to the point they are able to use their entire planetary resources. They have also unified the population and eliminated undesirable elements such as terrorism and other forms of violent fundamentalist beliefs. They are able to travel to and explore planets, such as Mars in our case, within their solar system.

A Class II Civilization has progressed where they use the resources of their entire solar system. They may begin to explore and colonize other solar systems and use the resources of the entire galaxy.

A Class III Civilization may begin exploring beyond the borders of their resident galaxy. A civilization this advanced would be able to bend space and time at will. They would probably be capable of inter dimensional travel and even time travel.

A Class IV Civilization is one that uses the resources of the entire universe and may begin exploring trans-dimensional space and whatever else may be out there.

Of course, there are many events that could prevent us from moving forward in this manner: World War III, The Rapture, pandemics, etc. And the problem remains, can we attain a Class I Civilization with all the conflicts and division between nation states and other great divisions that exist among mankind?

These Class I – IV Civilizations form the background for some truly great novels and movies. Star Wars and Star Trek are two epic examples. Dystopian stories abound of when things go terribly wrong on the road to paradise. I’m outlining a book using just this premise. Even though Breakthrough is a trilogy, new book ideas just keep rolling out of the series and picking up where I originally intended to stop. I guess this is a good problem to have.

Question: What do you see our future as being? Paradise? Dystopia? Will we be a Galactic Emporer, masters of our universe, colonizing and subjugating the aliens?

Stephen Tremp, author of the BREAKTHROUGH series, has a B.A. in information systems and an MBA degree in global management. Stephen has a background in information systems, management, and finance and draws from this varied and complex experiential knowledge to write one-of-a-kind thrillers.

His novels are enhanced by current events at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and other scientific research facilities around the world. These potential advances have the ability to change the way we perceive our universe and our place in it!

Gosh, I like to picture a bright, happy future. I'm a positive person and envision only good things. But....I read a lot of dystopian novels and enjoy the differing entertainment values they offer. Lol

I might be a pessimist, but I don't see society as a whole progressing past where we are now for a very VERY long time, if ever.

I'd like to think that someday we could live in an A Class 1 civilization, but we have a lot of work to do before we get there.

I believe the peeps on earth will more than likely find another place out in the Galaxy to take over.

Thanks Shannon for hosting me today! This is a bit of a crazy topic as people have such differing views of our future and our place in it. Can we move forward with all the amazing possibilities available to us, or will we destroy ourselves or send our civilization back to the Stone Age? Maybe we've already done this once or twice.

I think that we will trash this planet completely. By the time this happens we will have found another one to live on, and the whole process will begin again.

I have no idea what's coming next. As it is, I'm constantly amazed by each invention that unfolds. Wish I had an iPad, but don't really need one.

It's still bizarre how we can connect with people around the globe on the Internet. Hardly believable.

Love your outline of civilizations, Stephen!

The book I plan to work on next will be both. Our Earth will be Dystopian, but will unwittingly interact with a Higher civilization, which will in turn encounter a previous higher civilization on Earth. Can't wait to get my current book finished & start on this one.

Interesting to see the classifications. And I see our future as a little of both. Some progress, some setbacks. Chaos with pockets of peace or vice versa.

Helen Ginger said...

I'm not heard these classifications before. I'm a bit sad to have to say that I'm rather pessimistic about the future of civilization. Too much hatred abounds.

Seeing as the past has been good and bad, with ups and downs, I assume the future will also have it's ups and downs. It's also all perception. Whether something is horrid or paradise really differs from person to person.

Oh! And Shannon! You've been tagged in the Lucky 7 meme. Stop by to see the rules. Can't wait to read your 7 lines!

Quite a bit of pessimism today. I could pose this blog next week and get a completely different set of responses. But the good thing is that people have an opinion of the future and this is a topic I can always talk about and elicit feedback.

As Einstein hinted, I see our future as being full of radioactive fallout and cataclysm.

I see dystopia and then the Rapture. Then seven more years of dystopia and then paradise.
Well, you did ask!

The future will be filled with flesh-eating bunnies. Better enjoy life while you can ;)

I'd like to think that the future would be peaceful and we'd reach Class I, but humans are awfully prone to violence, as history shows.

I fear where our world is going. There are entire societies who don't look very far into the future and some of them could do something really stupid that could bring Einstein's prediction true.
Great post, Stephen.

Very interesting classifications. I'm not sure what might happen in the very distant future, but I've been waiting for our Chinese overlords to take over America since I was 12.

Its amazing how many people have a sense of humor regarding our future. Man-eating bunnies? Why not. It could happen.

I've always loved that Einstein quote - it's chilling. A brilliant man!

I hope we're moving towards being a smarter, kinder species - but I'm not sure about that.

Interesting guest post. I'd like to think we could have a brighter, happier, peace filled future if we could just learn from all the mistakes made in the past.

Stephen, I had a college professor who made some very interesting points about civilizations. There were several empires/regimes/etc. that lasted a good long time before they imploded, so to speak, and he pointed out that the U.S. government, as it is, was nearing its height, that people should be prepared for big change.

I'd love to think we could reach Class 1, but I see humanity as a bit of a virus. Everyone wants to take over what they don't already have. This country is pretty...we need to own it. This country has resources we need...time to take over. So I'm afraid that's what I see us doing in space.

Thanks so much for such an interesting topic and guest post!

Thank you, also, to everyone who commented on here! Some very interesting discussion.

I like to think the future will be better and brighter, but I also have days when I think it will be the complete opposite.

I wish I could say the future will be brighter....

I don't know that we will climb up the classes much, but I do think the future will be more hopeful than much of dystopia out there. I hope so, at least.

Don't forget about the plague and hoards of zombie ghosts. :D

1/2 of our species is really arrogant and coarse, but a portion of us are more forward thinking and visionary. So, I think we'll slog through. Eventually, we will have to figure out how to leave Earth and the solar system.

Anonymous said...

Lots of reasons people think we will have to leave our planet and our solar system. Mainly because they think we'll screw things up here. Reminds me of the computer animated movie Wall-E.

I like the concepts of Classes 3 and 4, but if things are left in man's hands I don't see too much good coming out of it. I think Alex got it right. It's not going to be in our hands in the end.
