Mulder's Back!

Come on. Dish. Who watched X-Files last night? Did anyone miss it because the football game went late?

My husband and I were excited for their return, as brief as it will be. We always watched the original together. It was the one show we recorded. (On VCRs, kids. That you had to program, hoping all the while that it would do what you programmed it to do. And if you hadn't watched other recorded shows yet, you might have to sacrifice one in order to find a tape to record it on.)

I had heard that early reviews for this first episode weren't good, so I went into it not sure what to expect, and figuring that maybe it wasn't as good as the others will be, because this is the episode that brings them back and establishes their new ordinary world, plus whatever it is that brings them back. I wasn't disappointed, though the alien topic was always my least favorite part. I'm a monster-of-the-week girl, which stands true for Supernatural, too. Bring me a gruesome baddy, and you'll make my week. (Except the fluke worm. Keep the fluke worm. And the Peacock family.)

Still, it was good. I'm looking forward to the next one (tonight).

Speaking of aliens, I also finally saw The Martian. It was a good movie, and now I want to read the book. Matt Damon did a great job, and this is coming from someone who isn't a Damon fan.

With this film and Gravity, does this mean our attention is returning to space? It seemed for awhile that space wasn't in our collective conscious anymore. Not for those over school age. Few movies and television shows were reflecting it, though there was a period where they were huge. Is it that people burned out on the topic?

We scrapped aspects of the space program during this time, something that made me sad. But now I've heard there are launches from Florida occurring this year, so are we fully back in? Was it ditching our space exploration that made folks scramble to learn more, and to dive back into what was a childhood love for most kids? I'm not sure which comes first, progress in space exploration or fiction blooms about space. Either way, I'm happy it's coming back around.

Now give the planet Pluto back.

Did you watch X-Files? What did you think? Will you be watching the next episode? What did you think of them adding Joel McHale? Do you follow the space program? Were you sad when they retired our ships without plans for more? Which do you think comes first, interest in the space program or increases in space fiction?

May you find your Muse.

Sorry, I made it to the end of the football game and then taped the X-Files. Will watch tonight. Good to hear it didn't disappoint.
I thought The Martian was excellent. Better than Gravity.

I totally missed X-files. I forgot all about it. It was a crazy day. I'm glad to hear it was good though.

I never watched the X-Files but I'm interested in seeing these new ones.

I think space has always been something we've been interested in but it took a backseat there when vampires became all the rage. lol

Never was an X-Files fan so I'm not watching the new ones either. I was disappointed when the shuttle program was ended and nothing took its place.
I love hearing about space and keeping up to date like about the new big planet they found.

I never liked X-Files, so I didn't watch it.

The return to space is being driven by private companies.

I haven't watched yet but have it on my DVR. I'm so happy to have Mulder and Scully back! :)

I stopped TV a few years ago and just watch what I get on Netflix or Amazon. I'll have to wait to see this.

Oh man, I missed the X files, but not cuz of football. I forgot. I'll catch it On Demand later today. I loved all the gruesome and weird characters on the original series. I hope this series does as well, but doesn't start duplicating the old episodes.

I loved The Martian too. The sense of humor was great. I do hope the space program gets back into full swing. All it needs is renewable fuel and warp capabilities. Privatizing will help get it back on track.

We didn't watch it. The original was superb; this one can't equal that.

Hi Shannon - I watched some of the episodes .. but now enjoy seeing Gillian Anderson on our tv and cinema screens ... it's a programme I enjoy - but am not desperate to watch!! Cheers Hilary

It's starting in the UK in a couple of weeks, I think. I'll have an open mind when watching (I was a kid when the original was on, so some of the fine details are hazy anyway).

I think there's a lot of interest in space now with a British astronaut getting great publicity and possible life on Mars. We might well see renewed space exploration in fiction.

I watched and enjoyed it! I'm a huge X-Files fan, and loved seeing them onscreen again, although even I have to admit that the X-Files works best in a 1990s setting. Still, I'll keep watching:)

Don't have cable or satellite so no X-Files til it comes on netflix. I am, however, enjoying Supernatural. Especially Dean.

I enjoyed the new X-FILES more than I did THE FORCE AWAKENS. I think folks wanted to not like it. The newest STAR WARS looked good compared to the terrible prequels. X-FILES had to compete with our beloved memories of the first seasons.

I enjoyed THE MARTIAN as well. It is hard with being a rare blood courier to make time for movies or TV, much less writing! :-)

I enjoyed the first two episodes, and liked that 9/11 Truthers, Edward Snowden, and other conspiracy elements of our time have been folded into Mulder and Scully's world. I wrote a post about how our culture has changed and could easily be more hostile towards such fiction, but I still enjoy something this hokey and sincere.

I agree that The Martian was better than Gravity.

Oh no! Have you caught the other episodes?

The rise of the sexy vampire killed space! True, everything comes in waves. Space was out for a little while, but maybe it's coming back in.

Shannon Lawrence said...

It sounds like that's being revamped. I hope so.

A lot of things that are coming back around or changing seem to be driven by private companies. I guess if that's what it takes.

Me, too! I want to watch the Were one again.

I wonder how quickly they'll have it up? It's a short run. I do mostly watch on Netflix, too, and we don't pay for cable. But basic cable comes through.

Shannon Lawrence said...

Ooo, warp! I wonder if they're already working on that, seeing as how much of our technology is inspired by fiction.

Shannon Lawrence said...

I loved the original, but they're doing an excellent job on this one, too. It's perfect that it's a short run.

She's been all over the place lately! About time.

Shannon Lawrence said...

I hope you like it! I think it started when I was in high school. Either way, it had been awhile, so I rewatched on Netflix.

Shannon Lawrence said...

It probably does work best in a 90s setting, but I found how they drew the modern in interesting.

Shannon Lawrence said...

Definitely especially Dean.

I bet it is challenging to find time!

I was nervous that my expectations would be too high, so it was a great relief when I watched it and enjoyed it.

Shannon Lawrence said...

Yes, I loved that they wrapped in those items.
