Hellbound Books is seeking short stories for the anthology The Toilet Zone: The Royal Flush. These are NOT meant to be stories about the bathroom. Instead, they're short enough to be read while on the toilet. 2500 to 4000 words. Pays $5. Deadline October 31.

Untreed Reads is seeking short stories for the anthology I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight. This is a mystery/crime anthology where each story must be based on a one-hit wonder. 3000 to 5000 words. Royalty split. Deadline October 31.

Hike Your Way to Christmas Spirit & Links

My minions and I have been hiking almost daily for the past two weeks. There's a park with hiking and rock climbing within walking distance of my house, which helps quite a bit. As soon as they're done with homework, we're off, trying to beat dusk. On our first day hiking, we discovered this little tree, all decorated for Christmas. Today, we found the number of ornaments almost doubled. We'll be taking our own up there to add tomorrow. Here's the tree when we first came across it.

Isn't it cute? It's like the Charlie Brown Christmas tree, only this one's got roots.

Sci-Fest is holding the Roswell Award for Short Fiction. Science fiction stories of up to 1500 words. First prize will receive $1000. Deadline is January 15.

Highlights Magazine for Kids is holding a fiction contest. They should be mysteries. Stories up to 750 words. Three prizes of $1000 will be awarded. Deadline January 31. 

Really Slow Motion: Of Mist and Magic is a contest that combines music and flash fiction. Brought to us by Samantha Redstreake Geary, Epic Music Vn, and Really Slow Motion. Listen to the song selection and write your own re-imagining of a classic fairy tale in 500 words or less. Deadline December 15. Winner will appear in the anthology. A variety of other prizes are being rewarded, as well.

Long Count Press is seeking science fiction stories about space exploration and human ingenuity for their anthology Golden Age. Deadline September 30. Pays $20 plus a percentage of the profits and a contributor copy.

Rose Lemberg and Stone Bird Press are seeking stories that don't necessarily fit in elsewhere, and that fit the genres included in Speculative Fiction. 500-1400 words. Deadline September 30. Pays $.06/word for originals and $.03/word for reprints.

Dark Regions Press is taking submissions for their anthology I Am the Abyss. Adventure stories of horror and/or dark fantasy. 10,000-18,000 words. Deadline October 1. Pays $.05/word, plus royalties, plus contributor copy, plus signed print of artwork.

Whitefish Review is accepting submissions for Issue #16 - The Geography of Hope. Deadline October 1. They pay $10/printed page, minimum of $25, maximum of $50.

Unlikely Story is reading for The Journal of Unlikely Cryptography. Deadline October 1. Up to 8000 words. Pays $.06/word.

Lectores Coffee accepts short fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, which they print directly on their coffee bags. 350 words or less. They take submissions at any time, but have specific reading periods. Current reading period ends October 1. Pays $20 and a free bag of coffee.

Brain, Child is a literary magazines for moms. They take several types of submissions, which they're open to year round, but they have a deadline of October 1 for a series of blog posts they're looking to fill. One is on LGBT families and the other is adoption-themed.

If you are a member of the Insecure Writer's Support Group, you can submit to the IWSG Guide to Publishing and Beyond. Your piece can be on either writing, publishing, or marketing. Deadline October 2. 200-1000 words. The e-book will be free, and there is no pay associated with this.

that's life! is open to your fast fiction. Multiple themes and genres (see the link for details.) Pays per published page, from 600-2600 words. Pays $200-$500, depending upon number of pages.

Dark Fuse takes dark fiction short story submissions for their magazine and anthologies. 2000-5000 words. Pays $50 (with the addition of royalties for their anthologies).

Freefall Magazine closes for winter issue submissions August 31. Open to Canadians only. They take fiction, poetry, art, and book reviews/interviews via query only. Pays $100 for fiction and art, $25 for poetry.

The deadline for Vine Leaves Literary Journal October issue is August 31. Vignettes of no more than 800 words, poetry, or artwork/photography. Pays 3.50 EURO.

The Reading period for the fall issue of Wolf Willow Literary Journal closes August 31. Poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and artwork/photography. Pays $10-$20, depending upon your medium.

Third Flatiron is taking submissions for their fall issue with the theme Abbreviated Epics. 1500-3000 words unless it's humor, which should be no more than 600 words. Deadline August 31. Pays $.06/word.

Dreaming Robot Press is putting together an anthology, 2014 Young Explorer's Adventure Guide. Aimed at Middle Grade readers of sci-fi. 3000-6000 words. Deadline August 31. Pays $.06/word.

The reading period for KYSO Flash closes August 31. They are currently only open to halibun, prose poetry, essays, and reviews. Pays between $.10 and $.14, depending upon length.

Helen Literary Magazine closes their October issue reading period August 31. Theme is Strong Female Lead. 500-5000 words. Pays a flat rate of $20.

Contests:

The Creative Writing Institute is holding their International Short Story Contest. No entry fee. Any genre. Themed contest must include these lines: "I have a list and a map. What could possibly go wrong?" This is for a themed anthology. Cash prizes. First place is $200 or a free writing course with a personal tutor, plus publication. Closes August 9.

Loudoun County Public Library is holding their Write On! Adult Short Story Writing Contest. No entry fee. Closes August 11. No more than 2500 words. First prize is $200.

Xchyler Press is holding a contest for their anthology with the theme Out of This World...True Story. Deadline August 31. 5000-15,000 words. Fantasy.

I’m a Kurdish-American author who was born in New York City, and I presently call Miami my home. I received my master’s degree in psychology from Florida Atlantic University. After becoming a voracious reader in high school and a relentless writer dabbling in many genres in college, I found my niche writing for young people. Today I'm a MG and YA writer published through various presses. In addition to being a writer, I'm a middle school English teacher. My memberships include Mensa, ALAN, and SCBWI.

Ruminate Magazine's Janet B. McCabe Poetry Prize closes May 15. Entry fee is $20. First prize is $1500, plus publication in the Winter Issue.

The Pikes Peak Pen Women Annual Flash Fiction Contest closes tomorrow, May 1. Entry fee is $10. First prize is $100. The theme is "In this moment."

The Epic Heroes Event invites you to create your own original superhero, inspired by the Phenomena track "Fortress of Solitude," less than 1200 words, and post it for consideration for publication. Deadline May 15. Winners will get Phenomena-themed prizes and publication for some. Hosted by Samantha Redstreake Geary and Audiomachine.

The Guardian is offering the All-New Monthly Literary Prize for Self-Published Authors. Submissions will be open the first fortnight of each month. The prize is publication of an excerpt in The Guardian to hopefully gain attention for your book.
