Today is the First Loves Blogfest, run by Alex J. Cavanaugh.

First Movie-Ladyhawk

I decided to go with the first movie that wasn't a cartoon that I loved (The Last Unicorn was the cartoon).  What can I say about Ladyhawk?  Romance, the darkness, love unrequited, mysticism, Rutger Hauer, Matthew Broderick, Michelle Pfeiffer, adventure, magic, destiny.  This movie grabbed me by the throat then held onto my heart throughout my childhood and has maintained that power through my adulthood.  When my dad took a job in Maryland, moving us from Oregon, when I was seven years old, my grandma gave me this movie as my going away present, knowing how deeply I loved it.  The familiarity was a definite support when I moved somewhere so completely different and far away from extended family.  I still watch it several times a year.

First Music-Maneater by Hall & Oates

I struggled on this one. Do I go with DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, whose fun lyrics kept me sane during a rough time in my childhood? Do I go with Nine Inch Nails, who pulled me through my teen years? Those two were important to me, but the first song I loved was Maneater, by Hall & Oates. I can't really tell you why this one grabbed me. It creeped me out a little bit, but I liked the beat and the singing, the story. And, apparently, I like things that creep me out.  There was something about the way they performed the song that made it so haunting and intriguing to me.

First Book-The Hobbit

I had to decide between this, Anne of Green Gables and The Shining. Pretty random, huh? However, I believe I discovered The Hobbit first. They were all pretty close together. I remember exactly when and how I discovered The Hobbit, though, which I can't say for the others. It was fifth grade and I had a crush on the student teacher. During his student teaching stint he read a bit of The Hobbit each day. It drew me in immediately. I'd never heard of a hobbit, but it was Gandalf who really grabbed me. He was fascinating, powerful, mysterious. Would this odd little group make it through the myriad of dangers thrown at them? Would Bilbo get back home to his hobbit hole? Would he earn their respect. I was completely taken with the tale, and I immediately got it from the library after he'd finished reading it to us. Eventually, my parents bought the whole set for me, and I still have that set, plus an illustrated copy of just The Hobbit.

First Person-My One and Only

My first true love was, and is, my husband.  We worked together at a movie theater and happened to discover we were attending the same high school (he was a year ahead of me).  We were friends for a year or so before we dated each other.  He was friends with a guy I dated; I hooked him up with a friend at one point.  But we were always drawn to each other.  One day I looked at him and realized he was HOT!  I already enjoyed being around him, but now that final piece had clicked into place.  We got married straight out of high school, so I suppose that makes us high school sweethearts.  I still love to be around him, to talk to him, and I miss him when he's gone.  A phone call from him can straighten out a rough day.  He balances me out, calms me.  Plus, he spoils me rotten.  Who wouldn't love that??  He's my first and forever love.

This was fun; thanks, Alex!

Before you go, please check out the Post A-to-Z Road Trip, which opens today.  I'll post more about it for [Mostly] Wordless Wednesday, but for now you can find details at the A-to-Z blog.

What were your firsts?  Did you have a high school sweetheart?

May you find your Muse.

The Hobbit is a classic read but I've never heard of Ladyhawk. Interesting... I have to investigate.

Ladyhawke was a great movie! Michelle Pfeiffer at her best. And several people have posted about knowing their spouses a long time before dating. Guess that's the secret, huh?
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!

Lovely posting on the First loves and enjoyed reading. I have read so many today that are still with their first love, I think it is great! Also what a wonderful idea for the A-Z Roadtrip. :)

I saw Hall and Oates way backin the day. One of the best outdoor concerts I seen. That band was tight. Of course, they sang Maneater.

Oh man. Ladyhawke. I mentioned that movie to my husband once and he gave me a blank stare. I think it's going in the Netflix queue now.

It's funny that I never thought Ladyhawke was very popular but you're the second person I've come across who has featured it today.
As a long time Pfeiffer pfan it's always been one of my favourite movies, Michelle's ethereal beauty was perfect for the role of Isabeau and the slightly unusual 80's soundtrack is all part of Ladyhawke's charm.
I really enjoyed reading about the memories and emotions you have attached to it.

Good choice with the Hobbit. It was the book that made me give Tolkien a second try.

Not seen ladyhawke, I'll have to give it a look see :)

When MTV first started up, it seemed like the only video they had was Maneater. It was on all the time. I know, because I didn't have MTV, but every time I was at my friends' house, it would be on.

There was a time during high school when my best friend and I watched Ladyhawk nearly every weekend. That and Better Off Dead.

I met my husband at our 20th High School Reunion and five years later, we were married the day before our 25th and went to the reunion, married. He was not my first love, but my best love. BTW, your road trip idea is terrific. Thanks to you and Tina. I was feeling such a let down after the April challenge, now I have a new blogging goal.

Nice answers to all the prompts :) I too was torn between The Hobbit and another book...chose the other book 'cause of the sheer impact it had on me, but the Hobbit is still one of my old faves. I have yet to read LotR!

I have never seen Ladyhawk.

Great firsts! That song was one of my favorites too.

Danielle, gasp! I thought Ladyhawk was like Goonies or Breakfast Club and everyone had seen it. I'm seeing from other comments that a lot of people haven't heard from it, though. I may be traumatized!

Alex, I definitely think it doesn't hurt to have been friends with your spouse before it became romantic.

Gossip_Grl, Oh, lovely to hear so many are still with their first loves! I'm looking forward to finally getting around to everyone in the Blog Fest.

Stephen, ooooooooooooh, that is so cool!

Adrienne, oh my gosh, he HAS to see it!!

Timothy, it's a classic!

Paul, I'm looking forward to seeing who else chose it! Love Pfeiffer Pfan. Haha! And your comments are dead on.

Annalisa, thank you! I tend to see it as pretty perfect, myself. :D

Rebekah, thanks! Now I have to go see if you chose it, too.

Jeremy, I definitely need to remember. Just don't tell me you have the poster, cuz' I'd have a heart attack.

Shannon Lawrence said...

Jamie, that makes me wonder what story of his was the first try? And you MUST see Ladyhawk!!

Andrew, Better Off Dead, awesome! I was surprised I couldn't find a panther still from the video and was starting to think I'd imagined the entire video of Maneater. I'm a little relieved it wasn't just in my head.

Allison, gasp! I'm still not over the fact that there are people who haven't seen it. Any people.

Andrea, someone above mentioned it maybe being on Netflix. I love it so much I had to buy it on DVD when my VHS copy was no longer viable.

Becca, thanks!

Loverofwords, I'm glad to hear it (about the road trip)! Did you go to a really large school to have not known each other during high school? What a fun and unique story.

Enid, I think they were both 80's era. I can't wait for The Hobbit on film! I've been waiting for that since they put Lord of the Rings on film.

Jessica, yay for a fellow Hall & Oates fan!

Trisha, I'll have to see what won over The Hobbit! Honestly, Lord of the Rings has never been a favorite, though I did enjoy the films.

Christine, I'm glad it wasn't just me that loved the song!

Hall and Oates are one of my favorite acts--some of the most perfect pop songs ever. I never really had a high school sweethearts--a few crushes, but nothing that was mutual or lasting. I was pretty much of a studious unsocial nerd in high school.

Michael, yay for remembering Ladyhawk! Why is it we always want someone to enjoy what we enjoyed?

Cate, that is definitely sad. It's been a really long time since it was anywhere on TV, I think.

Carrie, haha, thanks!

Tracy, I also have the movie on DVD! My daughter loves it, but my son has never taken to it the same way.
